Entertainment: Yvonne Nelson Releases Statement.

Celebrities at the top of their food chain usually treated rumours flying about them with a cold shoulder and then silence, only reacting when a journalist walks up and confronts them with it.
Top Ghanian actress, Yvonne Nelson, however, is not waiting for any journalist nor will she be silent on this new matter.
She has perceived danger in a rumour she claims is making the rounds in media reports about her bleaching her skin and has taken the news to the press by releasing a statement.
“My attention has been drawn to recent media reports that I am bleaching my skin and the continuous nature of this wicked, unfounded and absolutely unnecessary misinformation have compelled me to once again respond.
*Yvonne Nelson
These stories are absolutely not true and do not in any way put food on anybody’s table, does not add value to any body’s life and can only be described as mischief.
I fully understand the dangers of skin bleaching and would not engage in any such venture. I am a lady and I appreciate my God-given looks. I do not need to change my skin colour for any reason.
Truth is that even if I was bleaching, I do not owe anyone any explanation, but I am not bleaching, I have not bleached and I won’t bleach.
I love my skin just the way it is and I do my best to keep it healthy and nice.
If God has remained good to me and continues to make my skin nicer, I do not see how it should be a problem to someone.
In a society that largely frowns on skin bleaching, it would be unfair and very unkind to falsely accuse me of bleaching when I am absolutely innocent of that charge.
As an actress I take different pictures under different shades of light and with different shades of makeup depending on what the picture would be used for.
It is therefore not strange to find different pictures of me looking different. It does not mean I am bleaching and one does not need to be an industry player to know this.
Even in movies, depending on who the director is, there are different lighting angles and brightness levels that can be used to make a character look different and this is no secret. Even a change of weather can have an effect of one’s skin.
I want to use this platform to assure all persons who have expressed worry about these reports that there is no cause for alarm because I am not bleaching, have not bleached and would not bleach.
There are more prudent and beneficial things to focus on and these frequent distractions are of no use.
I should have spent this time focusing on my new movies or memorizing my next script and not responding to false gossips.”
Thank you. Sincerely yours, Yvonne Nelson.

News: NSCDC Deployed 30,000 officers.

Dr Ade Abolurin, the Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), says 30,000 officers have been deployed nationwide to beef up security during Sallah celebrations.
He said that the officers were deployed to ensure peace and security of the people’s lives and properties during the festivity.
Abolurin said that the NSCDC was on the alert and ready to deal with any individual or group that might constitute a threat or nuisance to others during the celebration.
“We are always prepared to work for the stability and peaceful co-existence of Nigerians; our men have been deployed to even villages to ensure that people are safe,’’ he added.
Abolurin paraded Mrs Jennifer Osuagu, a 29-year-old lady from Udi in Enugu State, for her alleged involvement in job racketeering.
He said that the suspect allegedly connived with Mrs Obase, at large, to collect more than N120,000 from persons under the guise of securing employment for them in various government agencies.
He said that investigations by the NSCDC revealed that Osuagu collected between N10,000 and N50,000 from her victims for jobs in NSCDC, Customs, Nigeria Immigration and Prison Services.
Abolurin said that the suspect also used the names of prominent Nigerians to hoodwink gullible victims into paying money for jobs.
Osuagu, who spoke to newsmen, said that she was recruited by Mrs Obase who claimed to have connections with the agencies.
She alleged that those who submitted names for the employment racket made payments directly to Obase who, in turn, gave her a certain percentage. (NAN)

News:A 25-Years-Old Man charged for stealing Bible.

A 25-year-old unemployed man, Ade Akindele, has been arraigned before Ojo Magistrate Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing a King James Version of the Bible valued at N1,000, from a shop.
Akindele, who had no fixed residence, was said to have become dazed after allegedly removing a black purse and a Bible from the table of one Miss Blessing Awodita (complainant), while she was asleep.
It was gathered that the accused, after allegedly stealing the Bible, stood in the shop for a while with the Bible in his hand, staring at the complainant who was sleeping, before he was nabbed.
The prosecutor, ASP Friday Eze, informed the court that when the complainant suddenly woke up from her slumber, she did not find it funny to see the stranger gazing at her, with her Bible and purse in his hands. He told the court that the frightened woman shouted for help and two of her male neighbours accosted the accused who resisted but was subdued by the men.
According to the prosecutor, “the accused was staying at the mechanic garage on Aka Road, off Salami Street, Afromedia, Lagos and committed the offence on October 9, at about 9.30 a.m., at Shop B, No. 22, Adebisi Close, Sabo Ajangbadi, Lagos.”
However, when the plea of the accused was taken before the magistrate, Mr. T.O Shomade, he first pleaded “guilty” but later changed to “not guilty,” to an offence that contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Sequel to the accused plea, the magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N10,000 with one surety and adjourned the case till November 12 for mention.

News: FG To ProbeTiv/Fulani Crisis says Benue Speaker

Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. David Iorhemba, has urged the Federal Government to set up a panel of inquiry into the lingering Tiv farmers and Fulani herdsmen crisis that had in recent time claimed over 300 lives with over 15 communities sacked.
He also pleaded with the government to take decisive steps to disarm mercenaries whom he claimed had been deployed by the herdsmen along the Benue-Nasarawa borders.
The Speaker who addressed newsmen, yesterday, in Makurdi on the recent conflict in his constituency between Tiv farmers and herdsmen at Yogbo in Guma Local Government Area that claimed over 30 lives stated that the conflicts had taken a dangerous dimension resulting in persistent killings.
Iorhemba stressed that the persistent conflict had in the last one year subjected his constituents to untold hardship without any source of livelihood with most of their farmlands destroyed by the invaders.
He said: “We are disappointed that the Nasarawa state government has also repeatedly failed to check the influx of mercenaries who camp in their communities to  unleash havoc on my people, despite several moves by the Benue State government to arrest the trend.
“The unfortunate development has necessitated the need for the Federal Government to set up a panel of inquiry into the persistent bloodbath that has left most of the Tiv communities ravaged and desolated.”
The Speaker also urged the federal government to tag those behind the killings as terrorist advising that traditional rulers allegedly fueling the crisis should also be cautioned in order to avert further bloodbath in the affected communities
Iorhemba warned that if necessary steps were not taken to stem the killings, the Tiv nation would be forced to take its case to the United Nations.

News: Leadership Death In Africa

The world’s biggest individual prize — was not awarded for a third time in four years as no suitable candidates were found, it was announced Monday.
At a press conference in London, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation said it was not going to compromise on its standard of excellence in a leader.
The award, set up by Sudan-born telecoms tycoon Mo Ibrahim in 2006, carries a $5 million prize paid over 10 years and $200,000 annually for life from then on, with a further $200,000 per year available for 10 years for good causes backed by the winner.
The award goes to a democratically-elected African leader who has served their mandated term and left office in the last three years.
“You make your bed, you have to lie on it. If we said we’re going to have a prize for exceptional leadership, we have to stick to that. We are not going to compromise,” Ibrahim said.
“We are not just in the business of positive messages — we would lose our credibility.”
The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has awarded the annual prize only three times since it was established, plus two special awards given to South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and South African former archbishop Desmond Tutu.
The prize committee said they reviewed a number of eligible candidates “but none met the criteria needed to win this award”.
“The award is about excellence in leadership. In the first six years the prize committee has selected three very worthy laureates who continue to be an inspiration and whose examples, we hope, will be emulated.”
The inaugural prize went to former president Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique in 2007 and Botswana’s ex-president Festus Mogae won in 2008.
The prize was not awarded in the following two years. Former Cape Verde president Pedro Pires won the 2011 prize.
The London-based foundation also publishes the Ibrahim Index, ranking 52 African countries according to 88 indicators grouped under safety and the rule of law, participation and human rights, sustainable economic opportunity and human development.
There has been no change in its top five this year — with Mauritius topping the index with a score of 83 out of 100, ahead of Cape Verde (78), Botswana (77), Seychelles (73) and South Africa (71).
Somalia remained at the bottom with a score of seven, behind Democratic Republic of Congo (33), Chad (33), Eritrea (33) and the Central African Republic (34).
Ibrahim said that while there had been major improvements in some sectors, the continent’s main players were lagging behind.
“Between 2000 and 2011 there is a marked improvement in governance across Africa,” he said.
“The major improvements were in health, the rural sector, the economy. The interesting development was in gender. Gender has improved amazingly over the last 10-11 years. The highest improvement in any category in the index.”
However across the data, “the four main powerhouses in Africa — Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya — appear to be really stuttering. They are not showing really convincing progress.
“East Africa is not doing that well. It has been over taken by west Africa in the category of sustainable economic development.
“In general, we see positive development in Africa. The economy is moving forward relentlessly. Education and health is improving, there is great development there. Gender issues are improving.
“We see, unfortunately, a little bit of decline in the issues of human rights and participation. Economic development does not give us a reason to be complacent about that.

Sport: ARSENE WENGER says "We win a trophy every year'.

ARSENE WENGER has launched a stunning defence of his Arsenal record, claiming qualifying for the Champions League is like winning a trophy.
The Gunners have been without silverware since 2005 but are in Europe’s top competition for the 15th consecutive year.
But speaking at the club’s annunal general meeting today, the Arsenal boss said: “For me, there are five ’trophies’.
“The first is to win the Premier League, the second is to win the Champions League, the third is to qualify for the Champions League, the fourth is to win the FA Cup and the fifth is to win the League Cup.
“I say that because if you want to attract the best players, they do not ask ‘did you win the League Cup?’, they ask you ’do you play in the Champions League?’.”
Chief executive Ivan Gazidis, chairman Peter Hill-Wood and majority shareholder Stan Kroenke were all heckled at the AGM over the club’s financial strategy.
Wenger, though, received a warm reception after his address, which had opened with an apology for the back-to-back defeats against Norwich and Schalke. He said: “If everybody is absolutely devastated when we finish third in the league, I promise you I will not be here if you finish 15th one day.
“We did not produce a good performance last night, but let’s not forget it was a first home defeat in the Champions League for 43 games — not many teams do that.
“It is always difficult after a defeat to take a distance with the result and look at the bigger picture.
“This team started in a very dynamic and promising way. We hit the wall in the last two games, which was a bit inexplicable, but the attitude and focus of the team every day is fantastic.
“I believe this team can deliver and I am optimistic we will have a good season and the players will show I am right.”
Wenger, 63, also defended the club’s financial policy — but stressed that for him, it was always about the football.
The Frenchman said: “My job is to deliver a team with the resources we have, and I have never complained about that.
“I want a club to pay players from its own resources, there is no shame in that.”
Wenger ended his address with a call for unity.
He added: “We want first to win the Premier League, that is what we are here for and that is what we want to fight for.
“Believe me we will give absolutely every drop of energy to achieve that and will do that again this year.
“It is still important that we keep our strength and stay united for the good of Arsenal, sometimes you can forget that.”
Gazidis had earlier said that Arsenal would be able to compete with the world’s biggest and best clubs as UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations become more rigorously enforced.

News: Living in Lagos without .

For days now, living in Lagos has become a sort of hell to some people. No thanks to the ban on commercial motorcyclists, otherwise known as Okada from plying some roads in the state.
The enforcement of the ban took a new dimension early this week when the okada operators took to the streets to protest indiscriminate arrest of their members and subsequent seizure of their motorcycles, and the process, destroyed public facilities including BRT buses.
This it was learnt, angered the state government warranting a heavy clampdown on the defaulters by enforcing agents. As a result of this, okada riders across the state suspended their operations. The situation is compounded by the ‘perceived’  scarcity of petroleum products. Perceived because, it is believed that the scarcity was created by greedy marketers who hoard the products only to sell at odd hours.
*Some commercial motorcyclists during operation
All these have made life miserable for Lagosians. At every bus stop, commuters are seen stranded while some were left with no option than to take a long trek to their destinations.
Some of the commuters who spoke to our reporter said they lacked appropriate words to described the hardship they are going through and called on the state government to immediately address the situation.
Even car owners were not spared. The ban has witnessed an increase in number of vehicles on the roads, as those who rarely use their cars , for fear of being held up in traffic and miss business engagements, had no option than to use their cars and spend hours in traffic.
Those who commented on this issue were of the view that the government should have put some measures in place before full implementation of the new law, so as to cushion the effects on residents.
Mr Christopher, a journalist with one of the national dailies in Lagos, said the ban has made his work more difficult, particularly in meeting up deadline.
“Yesterday, I spent over an hour at a bus stop in the morning and over two hours in the traffic. The same thing happened in the evening. It was a terrible experience that I wouldn’t want my enemy to have.”
A banker, Kola and Zico, a trader at Ladipo market also shared similar experiences and opined that it is becoming unbearable to live in Lagos.
Most of the people who shared their ordeals with us maintain that the ban on okada was not bad in itself but stressed that everything was wrong about its implementation. They accused the police and other law enforcement agents of extorting money from okada riders even from those plying approved routes.
They suggested that for the law to be effective, government should provide alternative means of transportation, open new routes and repair bad roads.  They also called for close monitoring of  the activities of enforcement agents,  to check their excesses.
Do have your say:
However, if you are in Lagos, feel free to share your experiences with us and what you think should be the solution- the best ways to go about the implementation of the new traffic laws.

New: 39-Years Old Man Sentenced For Defiling A 5-Years -Old Girl.

Magistrates’ Court in Benin on Wednesday sentenced Mr Saturday Udoh, 39, to five years imprisonment with an option of N80, 000 fine for defiling a five-year-old girl.
Delivering judgement, Chief Magistrate Mike Osayi held that the prosecution, led by Sergeant Shaibu Mohammed, proved its case of defilement against the convict as required by law.
The prosecution had told the court that Udoh committed the offence on May 31, at Falodun Country Home Motel, Benin, and that the one-count charge contravened Section 218 of the criminal code.
The court held that the evidence of the convict that he went to collect money from somebody at the house opposite where he worked when the incident happened was untrue.
The court also faulted the witnesses called by the convict, noting that their testimonies were conflicting.
The court further held that the proximity between the convict’s residence and his office could not rule out the possibility of the convict dashing home to commit the offence and returning to work.
The court also held that there was identification parade conducted in the house and the little girl pointed at the convict as being responsible for her defilement.
Osayi described the victim as intelligent due to her evidence in court as well as the manner she responded to questions put to her by the court during cross examination.
Consequently, the court found Udoh guilty and sentenced him accordingly. (NAN)
