Scrapping Of The UTME And NECO Is Not Yet Decide, says FG

Worried by the anxiety that has trailed the purported scrapping of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME and the National Examination Council, NECO, the Federal Government has cleared the air on the matter, saying that no decision has been taken on the matter.
Many groups including members of the National Assembly and labour unions  have already kicked against the planned scrapping of the institutions, which have been providing services for students across the country.
Although the government is yet to issue a white paper on the recommendation of the Oronsaye Report, which recommended the reduction of government agencies to a reasonable number to save costs, a top government official last week leaked a report to state House correspondents, claiming that NECO and UTME had been laid to rest.

Basketmouth acquires custom made Insignia car; 1st person in Africa to own it

One of the biggest comedians to come out of Africa, Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth has just taken delivery of the 2013 Opel Insignia car. I heard from a close source to the comedian that it's a bespoke car, meaning that everything was built to Basketmouth's specification. The car is actually not sold at any showroom in the world...you can only order it. And Basketmouth's car I hear, is the only one that has been ordered in Africa. That means no one else has this car in Africa. The car sells for about 42 thousand pounds. Congrats Basket!!!

Four Nigerian students generate electricity from urine

The whole fun of living is trying to make something better – Charles Kettering, American inventor  and social philosopher.
Nothing is really a waste in the real sense of the word. Almost anything one can think of is reusable. Everything has some value one way or the other. This was what four teenage secondary school girls in Lagos set out to prove.
Disturbed by the incessant deaths of Nigerians, most of the time, an entire family, from carbon monoxide poisoning from fossil-fuel generator, the yo-yo movement of petroleum products prices, environmental degradation and the recent fuel subsidy scam, four Senior Secondary School II students of Doregos Private Academy, Ipaja, Lagos, decided to find solution to the problem. The girls – Duro-Aina Adebola, Bello Eniola, Akindele Abiola and Faleke Oluwatoyin, shed some some light on the project and what they hope to achieve. Excerpts:
An idea is born:
Said Duro-Aina Adebola, leader of the group; “I read on the internet that a family of five died of carbon monoxide poisoning so I asked myself what could be done to reduce these incessant deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning?

UNILAG Announces New Convocation Dates

After series of meetings and deliberations, the management of the prestigious University of Lagos(UNILAG) has concluded all necessary arrangements and plans for its heroic Golden Jubilee Convocation earlier postponed to now hold on 7th, 8th and 9th of February, 2012.
On Monday, the institution authorities made an announcement to all graduating students, parents/ guardians and other
stakeholders that the Golden Jubilee Convocation Ceremonies earlier scheduled for January 17, 18 and 19 2013 will now hold on the 7th, 8th and 9th of February, 2013.
It would be recalled that the annual event was earlier postponed for certain reasons, relating to name change of the University.
However, with the rejection of the bill by the House of Representatives to change the name of the institution from University of Lagos (UNILAG) to Moshood Abiola University (MAULAG) left Mr. President with no other alternative than to accept that the institution must remain what it is, in deed and in truth.
Information gathered by DailyPost from a reliable source reveals that the main issue at the Presidency is no longer on whether the convocation will hold or not, but whether it will be safe for the president to attend.
The source said, ” the Presidency is really very worried over his attendance because of irate students. Out of the three days scheduled for the events, President Jonathan is likely to be present by the weekend when most activities have been concluded and students will be scanty.
Representative of Mr. President, while speaking to officials of the school, downplayed the name-change saying it was just an honour for a virile Nigerian, Chief Moshood Abiola, and that the President had no ulterior motive.
It was also reported that President Goodluck Jonathan communicated same to the University after his defeat.
However, authorities of the great institution wants his presence so he can use his own mouth to mention the University’s name in deed and in truth.

Earnings Of Yoruba Movie Stars

Quite a number of perks come with being a movie star in this part of the world. They include designer clothes, luxury cars and posh apartments. Apart from their penchant for such status symbols, today’s Nollywood actors and actresses are also seen as role models, especially to the young and impressionable who dream of becoming stars some day.
But, judging by the results of a recent investigation conducted by Saturday Beats, it appears all that glitters is not gold, after all.

Otokoto Murder Suspect Free

TIME was when some people of sudden wealth took over the landscape of Imo State. They did whatever they liked, when, how and where they chose. Some even felt that spotting policemen as orderlies were no longer fashionable hence they settled for armed soldiers.
More often than not, they were seen blocking the roads completely, while chatting with their friends. Anybody that dared to protest got the severest beating of his life. The “bouncers” around them descended on motorists at will and even went as far as denting people’s cars at the slightest “provocation”. Nobody dared to call them names. They were gods of sorts.
They threw money at people with ease. Royal fathers fell over heels and wanted to outdo each other in their mad rush to hand out chieftaincy titles to this class of people. All these acts angered the people.
Mr. Ebenezer Egwuekwe
Mr. Ebenezer Egwuekwe
It was no wonder that people’s anger boiled over in 1996, when they heard about the brutal beheading of 11-year old Innocent Okonkwo and his eventual burial in a shallow grave located in Otokoto Hotels, Amakohia, Owerri. That marked the limit of their endurance. They could take no more and the result was a mass protest in Owerri.
Angry residents of Owerri moved from point to the other in search of these people of very questionable wealth. Buildings belonging to such people were torched. Their personal effects were either burnt or looted by people. Cases of missing persons, dehumanization, brutalization, molestation and wanton destruction of property belonging to hapless and helpless citizens abated in the state.
The spontaneous agitation by the people gingered the security agencies into action. A lot of people were arrested and suffered serious deprivations as a result. A new vista of life commenced. Virtually all the people working in Otokoto Hotel, including the Hotel Manager, Mr. Ebenezer Egwuekwe, were arrested.
Summary trial
If residents of Owerri were given the opportunity, all the suspects would have been given summary trial by the mob and lynched. All the same, the suspects suffered varying levels of indignity. Members of their different families even had worse stories to tell than those cooling their heels in prison. A couple of those described by the police as “the prime suspects” were later arraigned in court. After a long tortuous criminal trial in Owerri, they were sentenced to death.
The convicts, including 62-year old Ebenezer Egwuekwe, were moved to Federal Prisons, Port Harcourt. However, armed with his stoic belief in his innocence, Egwuekwe appealed his death sentence. This battle for life lasted about 16 years! For the family, it remains a thing of joy that their bread winner did not die in prison while the legal battle lasted. They are also happy that 16 years after, the innocence of Egwuekwe has been upheld by the Court of Appeal.
His ordeal started when one of the staff of Otokoto Hotel was caught with a fresh human head at Eziama, in the Ikeduru Local Council Area. He was asked to report to police which he did. He was subsequently arrested and charged for murder.
Narrating his prison experience, Egwuekwe said he was moved from one prison to another. According to him, his worst experience was in Port Harcourt where he was treated like a condemned criminal. “If I had committed anything worthy of imprisonment, I would have accepted my fate but unfortunately, I did nothing to warrant 16 years of suffering. While in prison, all my friends deserted me and my wife and eight children passed through very difficult times,” Egwuekwe said.
He recalled with grief that his few landed properties were sold to pay his legal fees and take care of his feeding. He stated that he cannot fully express the level of hardship his family passed through as he was the only bread winner of the family.
Egwuekwe was, however, thankful to God that despite his travails, he has been released and cleared of all the charges slammed on him. He however appealed to people of goodwill to assist him get back on his feet and be integrated into the free society again. He added:“ I don’t know where to start life again. I don’t even know with what to start with again. My mates, who started the race with me, have since overtaken me.”
Speaking also, his first son, Mr. Ifeanyi Egwuekwe, affirmed that the family passed through very hard times since their father was arrested and incarcerated.
“Besides spending a staggering N2.5 million as legal fees, the family also incurred other expenses. In all, we are very happy that our dear father has been reunited with the family”, Ifeanyi said.

3 Relationship killers to avoid

For your relationship to last longest, try to avoid the following relationship killers:

What it means: "I really don't care about getting this position."

Well, like we would say, these kind of things only happen in Nigeria.

We really can’t figure out the concept behind this wedding reception, but our rough guess is that the couple love the idea of Burj Arab in Dubai, and were keen on recreating something close to it here.

However, they scaled down theirs to a swimming pool, not the middle of an ocean.

The Glitches At D’Banj’s Koko Concert

Wasn’t D’Banj’s Koko concert which held on December 27, 2012 supposed to knock us off her rocker, wishing the night never ended as it promised to offer fun to last us into the New Year? But it seemed the Koko Master hit the blank this time, ending a rather awesome year on a roller-coaster ride of shame.
Though everyone applauded the artiste for the choice of venue which was the Eko Atlantic City but when you come to terms with the distance you have to trek to get to the heart of the concert, you would realise walking some 20km stretch isn’t a balmy way of starting a night of fun, especially one you paid through your nose to have.
