News: Robbery Suspect Discharged after 5yrs In Prison.

A 32-year-old man, Bolarinwa Ishola, has been discharged and acquitted by an Ikeja high court, after five years of being in prison custody for armed robbery charges levelled against him.   He was discharged by Justice Habeeb Abiru for lack of diligent prosecution by the prosecutor.
The Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution had charged Ishola to court on a two-count charge of armed robbery in May, 2011.
According to the charge, Ishola and others said to be at large, allegedly robbed a house at Ketu in April 2008.  During the trial of the suspect on April 29, 2012, a prosecution witness and the landlord of the house alleged to have been robbed denied knowledge of such incidence.
At the resumed trial of the matter  yesterday, the DPP, Mrs. P.C. Alu asked for adjournment to enable them produce their witness in court. But counsel to the defense, Mr. Adigun Orunmila objected to the DPP’s request for adjournment.
Orunmila argued that the matter has gone through many adjournments without the prosecutor being able to bring forward any other witness. He asked the court to discharge the suspect saying that, “if they are not ready to prosecute, why can’t they just withdraw the case.”
In his ruling, Justice Abiru stated that there has been no improvement on the matter in spite of the fact that it had gone through several adjournments. He therefore discharged and acquitted the victim of the charges of armed robbery, levelled against him since 2008.

Sport: Nations Cup Group Opponents Emerge.

All the 16 nations that qualified for the 2013 Nations Cup are hopefully wishing for an easy group paring as the continent soccer ruling body CAF will today hold the draw for the group stages.
Top seeds South Africa, defending champions Zambia, Ghana and Africa number one team Cote ‘d Ivoire are the big guns every other nation wants to avoid, but with African football becoming more unpredictable with every passing tournament coaches can only expect that they have an easy draw that will guarantee their progress into the crucial stages.
Whilst the 2012 edition of the competition saw many absentees from among the continent’s major footballing nations, this time around the big guns of Africa have made it—the only exceptions being Egypt, and Cameroon. Ten of the tournament’s previous winners will be competing in the Rainbow Nation, and the majority of the continent’s finest players will be flying down to South Africa in January to take their place at Africa’s high table.
With South Africa fans uninspired by recent performances, few are expecting great things from the hosts. Avoiding three of the continent’s more dangerous sides in the opening group stage will be an encouragement, but dangers do await in the other three pots.
All four teams in Pot 2 are capable of causing difficulties. Tunisia won the competition as recently as 2004, and offer competitive and organised opposition, whilst Mali, led by Bordeaux striker Cheick Diabaté finished third in this year’s tournament.
Angola were a disappointment in the 2012 Afcon, crashing out in the group stage after a draw with Sudan and a defeat against Cote d’Ivoire. With Valladolid frontman Manucho, however, there is always potential that they could trouble even the continent’s most accomplished defenders.
Nigeria complete the set in Pot 2, returning to the competition after an extended absence. Traditionally they are one of the continent’s giants, but it has been a tricky few years for Super Eagles fans.
Redemption began with a 6-1 hammering of Liberia in the home leg of the qualifiers—a result which sealed their place in South Africa. Nigerians will hope that the road to salvation runs easy in 2013, and certainly no one will relish taking on the powerhouse of West Africa.
“I have said to a lot of people and will say it again that I am not afraid of any team.
“You don’t win a championship by being afraid of your opponents and that is the spirit with which I am going into the draw.
“Let them bring on any team and we will give our all, we have a team that the world too should be afraid of,” said Eagles coach Stephen Keshi said as he headed off to South Africa.
In the third pool of competitors we find two Arab heavyweights expecting success and two West African nations that struggled to assert themselves at the previous tournament. Algeria and Morocco have slipped from the continental limelight recently, with the balance of power shifting beneath the Sahara.
Both squads are studded with stars however, and those in Pots 1 and 2 will be keenly hoping to avoid the Desert Foxes and the Atlas Lions. Neither will be an easy prospect.
Niger and Burkina Faso are newer faces at the continental high table; neither assembled any points at the previous tournament, as they struggled to compensate for inexperience. The steep learning curve proved too much, and both will be hoping to continue their education at the 2013 Cup of Nations, among the continent’s finest sides. Cynics will claim that the tournament comes too soon for these two to improve on their recent meagre showings.
The set is completed by the minnows of Pot 4. Cape Verde make their Afcon debut after defeating Cameroon over two legs in the qualifiers. Casual observers may well back the tiny island nation, content to make up the numbers in South Africa, but the Sharks’ display against the Indomitable Lions demonstrates that they are not a threat to be taken lightly.
Ethiopia and DR Congo complete the set. Both have previously been continental champions, although with no significant honours in the last 30 years, they are a pair of fallen giants. It’s a pleasure to see these faded greats back among the continent’s finest, although it will take a major effort for them to qualify from the taxing first round.
Players and fans associated with the continent’s football are licking their lips ahead of  the draw. Whatever the combinations drawn up, anticipation and excitement will begin mounting for the 29th edition of Africa’s finest national competition. It promises to be a spectacle not to be missed.

News: Boko Haram plans attacks.

The Nigeria Joint Military Task Force (JTF)  on Tuesday said it had uncovered a plot by Boko Haram Islamists to carry out “massive attacks” during an upcoming Muslim festival with the help of foreign mercenaries.
A spokesman said the insurgents were planning to strike in an embattled northeastern state during Eid-El-Kabir, typically called Sallah in Nigeria, which this year falls on October 25 and 26.
“Information available to the Joint Task Force indicates that the Boko Haram terrorists are planning to launch massive attacks on military and civilian targets in Borno state before, during and after the forthcoming Sallah celebrations,” Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said in a statement.
Violence linked to Islamist group Boko Haram’s insurgency in northern and central Nigeria, including killings by security forces, is believed to have left more than 2,800 people dead since 2009.
Most of the violence has been in Borno state, where Boko Haram has been based.
“The terrorists have invited foreign mercenaries to assist them in the anticipated attacks,” Sagir said, but declined to comment on the nationalities of the alleged foreign fighters.
“We know where they are coming from but we don’t want to disclose that because we don’t want to pre-empt our security arrangement to tackle them”.
Nigerian security forces have frequently exaggerated their success in cracking down on Boko Haram and it was impossible to verify their claims on Tuesday.
Boko Haram members are believed to have sought training in northern Mali from Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and its allies. There has been intense speculation over whether other links have been formed with foreign groups.
Nigeria’s military has claimed that insurgents from neighbouring Chad have previously fought alongside Boko Haram. Some security analysts say that Boko Haram regularly purchases weapons from markets in Chad and Niger.
The group has in the past carried out deadly attacks during Christian and Muslim holidays.
Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country where the 160 million population is roughly divided between the two faiths.

News: state police – Maku Says "Nigeria Is Not Ripe For State Police".

Information Minister Labaran Maku said on Tuesday that Nigeria was not ripe for state police.
Some governors have continued to clamour for state police, using the argument that the step would empower them, as chief executives of their states, to effectively secure their domains.
But Maku, who led the national good governance tour team, currently in Plateau, to a visit to the Police Staff College, in the outskirts of Jos, said that the nation lacked  adequate facilities to handle that.
He said that the nation’s police force was doing well in spite of the enormous challenges, stressing that advocates of state police had never looked at the area of training.
“Training is very key to success, unfortunately those asking for state police have not looked at that area.’’
The minister rejected incessant allegations of corruption slapped on the police by members of the public, and declared that there was no human institution that may not host some bad eggs from within it.
In his remarks, Mr Bala Hassan, the Commandant of the college, said that 53 intervention projects were being carried out in the institution.
He expressed optimism that the projects would address the challenges of the 36-year old college.
Hassan listed some of the projects to include a clinic, three blocks of hostels, 900 offices and lecture halls. (NAN)

News: A 39-years-Old Man Gets Jail For Beating His Wife.

An Agege Customary Court on Tuesday sentenced a 39-year-old man to 14 days imprisonment for contempt, following his disobedience to the court order to maintain the peace with  his estrange wife.
“The court hereby sentences you, Ibukun Oluwadamilare, to 14 days imprisonment for contempt of court for beating up your wife.
“I believe that if you get there, you will learn one or two lessons and you will control your temper thereafter,’’ the Court President, Mr Emmanuel Sokunle, said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the court, had at the last hearing, ordered the couple in the divorce suit to maintain the peace.
However, the wife, the petitioner in the suit, informed the court a day later that the respondent beat her, in spite of the order.
The petitioner, Adesewa, 33, had filed the suit in September, asking the court to dissolve her 12-year-old marriage to Oluwadamilare over battering and threat to life.
Adesewa, who lives at No. 18b, Kayode Joseph St., Powerline, Oke- Ira, Ogba, told the court: “My husband had wanted to make love to me in the presence of our children but I refused.
“He then beat me mercilessly to the extent of removing one of my teeth. If my husband has money, he won’t give me and the children.
“He prefers to go to the club and declare surplus and when the money is finished, he comes home to steal my money,” she alleged.
The mother of three children, aged between five and 10 years, also added that her husband often malign her before their children by making unsubstantiated allegation that she was promiscuous.
“We live in one room but my husband won’t wait till midnight when our children will be asleep before drawing my pants.
“My husband started going to a white garment church in April, and so, brings home different colours of candle.
“He left the church we were both going because he accused me of going out with our pastor and I am fed up with all of his behaviour,” she said.
Adesewa told the court that she wanted the marriage to be dissolved and also wanted the custody of the children.
In his testimony, the estranged husband denied some of the allegations.
“My wife flirts with different men. She even goes to the extent of sending money and recharge cards to them from my money.
“I traced her to where she was going one day and saw her entering a hotel but she had told me that she was attending a night vigil in church,’’ he said.
Ibukun also told the court that if his wife was ready to reconcile with him, she had to be three months pregnant for him.
“I told her in April that I still want a fourth child and she denied me access to herself. I am ready to take her back if she agrees to my terms,” he said. (NAN)

Sport: Arsene Wenger Want Response From Arsenal After A shock Defeat.

Arsene Wenger has called on his Arsenal stars to deliver an immediate response to their shock defeat against Norwich when Schalke visit the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Wenger’s team are now 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea after losing to previously winless Norwich for the first time in 20 years on Saturday.
An error from Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone presented Grant Holt with the goal that condemned the Gunners to their second league defeat of the season and Wenger’s grumpy mood after the match reflected his frustration at a lacklustre performance.
Arsenal will need a much improved display to see off German side Schalke and maintain their 100 percent start to the Champions League campaign.
And Wenger hopes the embarrassment of losing to struggling Norwich will provoke a reaction from his players on Wednesday.
“I hope it will have a positive impact,” Wenger said. “It was a shock to the system, but you have to give credit to Norwich because they played well, were completely committed and they deserved the win.
“Maybe we underrated the difficulty we would face, but the Premier League is the Premier League – if you are not ready for the fight then you will always have bad surprises.
“There is a big difference between the amount of possession we had and the amount of chances we created, that is down to the fact that Norwich defended well and we did not create a lot.”
Wenger had included Jack Wilshere in the squad that travelled to Norwich for the first time in 14 months as he steps up his recovery from ankle and knee problems.
But the England midfielder didn’t come on at Carrow Road and is likely to have to settle for a place on the bench at best against Schalke.
Gunners winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had to go off with a hip injury against Norwich just 10 minutes after coming on in the second half, is definitely ruled out.
“I don’t see anyone new being (back) for Wednesday night,” Wenger added. “The closest will be (Kieran) Gibbs, but he will not be ready. (Theo) Walcott will not be ready.”
With Gibbs likely to miss out again, Andre Santos will continue at left-back and the Brazilian has warned that Arsenal face a tricky test against Schalke.
The Gunners opened their European campaign with successive victories against Montpellier and Olympiakos to top Group B, while Schalke have never won a competitive tie in England, losing four times and drawing once.
But Santos won’t take anything for granted.
“Matches in the Champions League are never easy – you play against world class players and you need to show character and strength at all times,” he said.
“Look at our match in Montpellier – we went 1-0 down and we had to fight to get back into the game, which we did very well and won the match.
“We have another difficult match against Schalke coming up, but I believe Arsenal has the quality and I think we will grow game after game in the competition.”
Should Arsenal progress, it would be the 13th season they have made it through from the group stages.
Santos knows full well securing qualification with matches to spare would have a positive impact.
“The earlier we qualify in the group stage the better and this will boost our confidence for the knockout stages,” he said.
“We are in a very strong position with the good start, but we are not qualified yet.
“We have to play a very strong team in Schalke twice yet, so we have to keep focused – but if we play to our potential, we are confident we can challenge for the (Champions League) trophy this year.”
