News: Collapsed LSDPC

INCIDENTS of collapsed buildings have become daily items in the news. It has long been established that most buildings, especially multi-floor and high-rise ones, collapse as a result of poor adherence to safety regulations for modern edifices.
Developers of such buildings often cut corners, avoid the employment of qualified building professionals and connive with regulatory authorities to subvert the law. Most collapsed buildings were either not certified by relevant government agencies or fraudulently approved.
What does one say of government-erected buildings collapsing? That was exactly the tragic incident in Jakande Estate, in Ejigbo, Lagos. A two-storey house built by the Lagos State Development and Property Company, LSDPC, collapsed on Wednesday, killing (as at press time) three people, injuring many others and extensively damaging private property.

News: Court Turns Down Plea By EFCC’s To Seize Fayose’s Passport.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Thursday  made a futile bid to  convince the Federal High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti to confiscate the international passport of the former Governor Ayodele Fayose.
The former governor is facing the criminal charge of alleged misappropriation of the sum of  N1.2billion being the sum of money earmarked for the state’s integrated poultry project while he was in  the office.
When the matter came up for hearing, the anti graft prosecution counsel, Mr. Adeniyi  Adebisi from Rotimi Jacobs Chambers, had raised the objection before Justice Adamu Hobon over the former governor’s  consistent   holding  of  international passport, despite court’s pronouncement that the passport be deposited  in its custody.
According to the counsel, one of the major  conditions reached to secure bail for  Fayose at EFCC office in Lagos  was that,  his interna- tional passport should be in the court’s custody pending the determ- ination of the case.
In his ruling, Justice Hobon averred that  the status quo should be maintained since no reported case of abuse had been reported against the former Governor by EFCC.

It all began like a joke. A reporter came into the newsroom around 7 p.m saying he could smell a cable burning inside the building. The security guards ran inside and tried to locate where the smell was coming from. They scoured the two upper floors and found nothing.
Electricity supply to the two floors was cut off. But the burning smell continued.
Thirty minutes after, a glow was sighted by the window of the third floor from the outside.
a fire man battles the fire at TheNEWS office
It was then it became clear what was happening. It was fire ravaging the floor. There was stampede as shards of glass started flying out of the windows and frantic steps marched upstairs, to deal with the fire.
It was an impossible mission. The office door was locked. But the staff were undeterred as the door, after much effort was smashed open.
But what greeted the staff was not what they bargained for. It was not a small fire, it was a smoldering one with great intensity and its surging force pushed the small party back on a hasty retreat.
This was not a fire that could be put off by pails of water. As it ravaged the floor, it needed the attention of the professionals.
