Court Jails Driver at Abuja

Magistrate Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced a driver, Olanrewaju Adekunle of Karimo in the FCT to one month imprisonment for causing accident through reckless driving.
The Police Prosecutor, Mr Buba Irimiya, told the court that on July 30, one Yakubu Isa of Kubwa, Abuja, reported the case at the Wuse Police Station.
Irimiya said the accused drove a car with registration number ES927APP along the Nnamdi Azikwe Express way without due care and attention and having no regards to other road users.
The prosecutor said that as a result of the reckless driving, the accused damaged the complainant’s Golf vehicle, with registration number ABC 956 AA.
He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 28 and 29 of the Road Traffic Act.
The accused pleaded guilty, describing his action as a mistake.
“The Golf car was parked at Zone 7 Motor Park but immediately I drove close to him, he started moving and I could not control myself at the time I got to his side.
“I was unconscious in the hospital for days and spent all the money I had on hospital bill, that was why I could not repair his damaged vehicle.
The Magistrate, Mr Musa Jobbo, said that the accused appeared remorseful but must be punished to prevent him from causing more havoc to other road users.
Jobbo sentenced him to one month imprisonment with an option of fine of N1,000.
He also ordered that he should pay for the cost of the damaged vehicle. (NAN)

"No Support from any Forceman" Says ACN

Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State should be neutral, said by Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN) .
The party called on soldiers and policemen “not to compromise  themselves with logistic support to aid their duties from the ruling Labour Party.”
A statement by the spokesman for the Independent Campaign Network, Mr. Bosun Oladimeji, on Wednesday, said there were allegations the LP was “trying to hoodwink the securities agencies”.
The ICN is one of the campaign organisations of the ACN’s candidate for the poll, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu.
Oladimeji said, “There are also allegations that LP chief, want to mount pressure on some top-ranking military officers to help disorganise the securitymen drafted to monitor the election.
“The ACN has it on good source that Mimiko has been in very serious discussion with the top officers of the Nigerian Army.”
He also alleged that Governor Olusegun Mimiko had compromised the leadership of the National Orientation Agency by promising it logistic support during Saturday’s election.
Efforts to reach the spokesman for the Mimiko Campaign Organisation, Kolawole Olabisi, and Publicity Secretary of the LP, Mr. Femi Akinjemiruwa, were not unsucessful as the phone numbers of both men were not switched off.

News: Senate Passed The Bill for Terrorism Act, 2011

The Senate, Wednesday, passed the Bill for Terrorism Act, 2011 and other related Matters as amended as part of moves to nip in the bud the present security challenge in the country where persons are killed almost everyday.photo
This followed the report presented by the Senator Mohammed Magoro led Senate Joint Committee on National Security and Intelligence; Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters and Drugs, Narcotics, Financial Crimes and Anti-Corruption.
With the passage by the Senate, it is expected that President Goodluck Jonathan will sign it into law to then become an Act of the parliament against the backdrop that the House of Representatives had earlier passed the Bill.
According to the Committee, the absence of a National Coordinator to tackle the problem of terrorism in the country has affected collaboration among the Security Agencies in fighting and combating terrorism, adding that there was no acceptable standard definition of terrorism and as such each country tries to adopt definitions to suit its peculiar situation.
According to Senator Magoro, PDP, Kebbi South, the Committee in its findings discovered the absence of specialized designated prosecutors and judges to try terrorism related cases as well as the absence of Specialized Prisons, detention facilities for keeping terrorist suspects.
Against this backdrop, the Committee said, ‘’the Joint Committee on National Security and Intelligence; Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters; and Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes was referred and having favourably considered same, recommends ‘’that the Senate do consider and pass the Bill for Terrorism(Prevention) Act, 2011 and for other Related Matters as amended.’’
Also same Wednesday, the Senate read for the third time, a bill to amend the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, providing for the forfeiture of all undeclared funds in breach of Section 12 of the Foreign Exchange(Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions)Act.
The Senate yesterday rejected the amendments of a bill that sought to remove the consent of a prisoner serving his term in a foreign prison, to be repatriated to complete his jail sentence in Nigeria.
Presenting the report on the money laundering bill, Chairman, Senate Committee on Drugs, Narcotics, Financial Crimes and Anti Corruption, Senator Victor Lar, Plateau South  who explained that the bill sought to increase the punishment for false declaration of funds to the Nigerian Customs Service, said,  “The 2012 amendment has removed the limit of ‘not less that 25 per cent’ of undeclared funds to be forfeited in the event of default to include the whole undeclared funds.”
Senator Lar explained further that  the amendment to be carried out the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) and the Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC) as regulatory agencies in addition to the Financial Intelligence Unit(FIU) contained in the Principal Act, adding that  as provided for in section 12 of the Principal Act, only directors of financial institutions were liable.
According to him, with the amendment the bill seeks to achieve,  both the corporate institution, the director and employees will now be liable, adding that the amendment made it mandatory for financial institutions to put in place, internal procedures, policies and controls with adequate resources units and regulatory agencies that will be empowered to impose penalties and sanctions.
Senator Lar said, “Under definition of terms, P.E.P(Politically Exposed Persons) is introduced to replace ‘Public Officers) used in the Principal Act. By adopting this definition, children and associates of politically exposed persons, even civil servants who preside over public funds or take decisions that lead to expenditure on the public purse are encapsulated friends, cronies of political office holders are also included.
At yesterday’s plenary, the Senate did not to pass the amendments to a bill on the transfer of Nigerians serving jail terms in foreign prisons, just as Senators rejected the provisions seeking to delete the sections which provides for the consent of the prisoners, through voice votes.
In his remarks, Senate President David Mark who noted that the bill had been passed by the House of Representatives, suggested that a harmonization would be required as that would handle the variations.

Nigeria's First Lady, returned to Nigeria.

After several postponements, Nigeria's First Lady, Patience Jonathan, returned to Nigeria from Germany where she was hospitalized for several weeks. Mrs. Jonathan arrived on a presidential jet around 3:45 PM Nigerian time.
She was welcomed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by officials of the Peoples Democratic Party, some female ministers, women groups and as well as party faithful bussed to the airport for the purpose.
Mrs. Jonathan was secretly airlifted to Germany in the last week of August 2012, and the news of her emergency evacuation and hospitalization was broken by SaharaReporters.
Presidency sources had previously told SaharaReporters that Mrs. Jonathan was billed to arrive home last week Thursday but that plan was overruled by the hospital authorities in Wiesbaden, Germany, and the trip was aborted.
While her exact diagnosis has not been confirmed by the presidency, Mrs. Jonathan will continue some of her treatment in Nigeria.  In a direct reflection of Nigeria’s decrepit medical facilities, she will be making trips to Germany in the future for further analysis and treatment.
Mrs. Jonathan is also a civil servant in her home state of Bayelsa, where she was named a Permanent Secretary a few months ago.

At Least, 49 People Was Killed Overnight.

At least 49 people have been killed overnight in northeast Nigeria in two separate incidents of violence, including fighting between Nigeria's military and the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram.
Fighting between military and the Boko Haram killed at least 24 insurgents in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state on Monday.
Spokesman of the military Joint Task Force (JTF) Lt Col Sagir Musa said Boko Haram sect members attacked JTF locations in Zannari ward and Lagos street along Gwange general area on Monday night leading to the confrontations.
According to him rocket propelled grenades and improvised explosives device were used by the insurgents in the attacks.
"All the attacks were repelled, 24 Boko Haram terrorists were killed," Musa said, refuting an earlier media report that the insurgents killed 10 civilians.
The commercial nerve centre of the town called the Post Office area was also hit by several explosions.
In a separate incident in Benue state, herdsmen believed to belong to Fulani community killed 25 persons in Yogbo.
Eyewitnesses said those killed in Benue were mostly children and women.
Attacks by Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen have led to several deaths in several states of northern Nigeria.
Boko Haram has been launching guerrilla attacks against Nigeria's weak central government for months as part of its efforts to free its imprisoned members and enact strict Islamic law across the multi-ethnic nation largely halved between Christians and Muslims. In recent days, it has begun a renewed offensive in Maiduguri.

News: Explosions And Gunfire Rocked Yobe State.

Serious explosions and gunfire rocked Potiskum in Yobe state on Wednesday, residents said, after violence this week left at least 24 people dead in the sister city of Maiduguri in Borno state.

Blasts and shootings shook residents of the town, previously hit hard by violence blamed on the extremist group Boko Haram, residents said.

The police commissioner for Yobe state, where Potiskum is located, said there had been a bomb explosion and security forces afterward cordoned off the area and began house-to-house searches.

He did not say whether there had been any casualties.

“There was a bomb explosion this morning and the Joint Task Force has already cordoned off the area for the safety of residents,” Patrick Egbuniwe said, referring to a military and police task force.

“Right now, there is a house-to-house search by JTF to fish out the perpetrators of the terror attack.”

Residents said the unrest began just before 6:00 am.

“It started with a huge explosion followed by successive blasts and gunfire,” said resident

The blasts and gunfire came from an area of the town where a bank, a military base and the office of the anti-narcotics agency are located, residents said.Potiskum in Yobe state, has been hard hit by Boko Haram attacks in recent months.

On Tuesday, Nigeria’s military said 24 Boko Haram members were killed in violence that rocked the city of Maiduguri after the extremists launched attacks with bombs and rocket-propelled grenades.

The military has been regularly accused of abuses, including the killing of civilians. Tuesday’s statement said there were no civilian casualties and one soldier was wounded, but the claims could not be independently verified.

Maiduguri is considered the base of Boko Haram. The conflict is believed to have killed at least 2,800 people since 2009.

How To Write A Good CV.

Recruiters receive more than enough applications for every job advert placed and the next thing they do is to screen all the CVs received. Some will ultimately end up in the dust bin just because of the substandard nature of the CVs. Please peruse the following mistakes to be avoided and suggestions given to have a CV that makes sense.

1. Grammatical spelling errors, punctuation and grammatical blunders might not be pardonable. Most times you find obvious grammatical blunders in applicants' CVs, and this occurs because many don't take the time to ever read through what they have written. Don't rely on word processing packages alone to check spellings as they can't pick up on all errors. The common errors usually involve tenses, genders, singular-plural usages and parallelism.
Suggestion: Apart from taking time to proof-read you Cv over and over to avoid errors, never feel too big to give it to someone who can also proof-read it for you to correct the blunders.

2. Avoid contradicting statements and records. Your CV should be accurate and honest , you should ensure that your academic records and bio-data do not conflict or contain contradicting information.
http://www.afternysc.com/cvs-resumes-f1.html
3. Poorly arranged layout and CV format can immediately send your CV to the dust bin. Don't use a wacky font: - 'Curriculum Vitae' - In general, Times New Roman, Arial or Tahoma in font size 11/12 is the norm. CV's should not be longer than two pages, and have a well justified text to space ratio. Always include your hobbies and interests; work and off work balance is important to employers these days. I will advice you stick to recreational activities and interests.

4. Establish a relationship between the kind of job you are applying for and your CV. It will not be too proper to have just one kind of CV that you use to apply for all jobs. Job hunters should incline their CV's and include relevant information only to the job they are they are submitting their applications for. Include specific achievements accomplished in each role listed, and detail your responsibilities. In which case? There is no one-fits-all CV; you should adapt your CV to the kind of job role you are applying for. Many graduates feel too lazy to take this point serious. They submit that same copied-and-pasted poor CV in all places expecting miracle.

5. Avoid unnecessary details in your CV. It is good to have a detailed CV but try and make all information provided to be related to the job you are applying for. It is not compulsory to include all job experience you have acquired; this could make your CV unnecessarily lengthy and I promise not all employers have time to read your newly published encyclopedia.

6. Do it right when using e-mail as the medium to send CVs. Don't just attach the 'bog-standard' covering letter; use the body of the email as your covering letter, using the formatting and language of a professional email and the refer to an attached CV.Always remember to include Sir/Ma please find copy of attached CV in the body of the message. It sounds polite and shows that you are dealing with real people. And remember to attach the CV! If you forget to attach it and you have to resend, an employer who has already received the first attachment-less e-mail may conclude you are a forgetful person.
http://www.afternysc.com/cvs-resumes-f1.html
7. Do not highlight faults and negative statements. If you were asked to leave any of the jobs detailed on your CV, don't draw attention to it. At the interview the interviewer may likely ask the reasons for leaving jobs.

With these simple guides among others, am sure you can be sure your CV to start with is in no way your stumbling block in your job search battle.

Different Between A Resume And A Cover Letter.

Resumes
Your resume represents an essential component of the job and internship application process. The resume includes information relevant to the opportunity you are pursuing and provides the connection between your education, experiences, and skills to the employer and industry of interest.

Cover Letter
A cover letter is often required by employers when submitting a resume for a job or internship. Cover letters represent a one-page document that highlights your writing style, contains no spelling and grammatical errors, and includes your most relevant coursework, experiences, and skills to the opportunity of interest.

If you have any additional thing to add, don't forget to leave us a comment.
