A 25-year old man, Umaru Ismali has been arrested by the police and
charged before a Lagos court for allegedly raping a 12-year old
physically and mentally challenged girl (name withheld).
The accused was caught by the victim’s elder sister at their Egan home in the morning when members of the family had gone to work.
we gathered that Ismali confessed to the crime at the police station and was asked to marry her. He however, rejected the offer, saying he cannot take her to his family.
Ismali is facing a one-count charge of defilement before Magistrate M.B. Folami of the Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court.
The court ordered him to be remanded in prison at the Kirikiri Maximum Security prison, Apapa for the alleged offence.
Ismali was alleged to have sneaked into the victim’s house at 15, Olabisi Olalekan Street, Egan on the outskirts of Lagos and raped her.
Luck ran out on him when the eldest sister who had gone to work suddenly returned home to take what she forgot. She was shocked to find Ismali on top of her sister.
She raised an alarm that attracted neighbours. She also phoned her parents who reported the matter to the police at the Igando division.
The accused was arrested and charged to court under Section 137 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was ordered to remanded in prison after the prosecutor, Adeleye Olufemi, informed the court that the case cannot go on because the medical report was not ready to ascertain the medical condition of the victim.
The matter was adjourned till 14 December, 2012 for continuation of trial.
